Project Description

Veterans Affairs Health Care Center

Charlotte, NC
The new five-story Veterans Affairs Health Care Center owned by Childress Klein-Cambridge Healthcare Solutions, LLC is located on 35 acres, which accommodates the buildings, courtyards, access roads, paved parking and central energy plant. The 431,000 GSF facility makes it the largest new lease acquisition for the Department of Veterans Affairs. It has all the departments and functions of a large hospital including 5 surgery rooms, 9 pre-op + 21 post-op recovery beds, imaging, 120 exam/observation beds (non-acute), women’s health services, laboratory, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy, canteen, variety of ambulatory clinic services, and typical hospital support functions.

The contemporary entrance welcomes Veterans and their families with an arrival court highlighted with a reflecting pool and fountain that reaches out, greeting arriving visitors. The landscaped front entry plaza can also be enjoyed within the building through the glass along the L-shaped circulation concourse. The Health Center’s medical mall concept with front-of-the-house circulation allows the patients and families to circulate in the mall-like area serving the clinics and diagnostic areas while the clinical staff and the support personnel can circulate in the corridors which serve these functions from the back of the facility.

The VA Health Care Center was awarded a LEED Silver Certification which is of particular significance. It was delivered by an integrated project delivery team composed of the architect, engineers, and the contractor who were selected by the building owners to be executed in a design build process. Because it was such a successful project, it was given the National Collaborative Award of the year 2016 by the International Partnering Institute. It was also given an award by the Charlotte Business Journal for the best “Heavy Hitter project” in that year.
