Alleghany Memorial Hospital Renovation & MOB Addition

Tryon, North Carolina
This project represents one of the major challenges in the current healthcare system; the delivery of comprehensive, cost effective health care services to a rural region. Alleghany Memorial Hospital recently partnered with Wake Forest Baptist Health and Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in order to meet these goals; and this project represents the realization of these objectives. The initial phase involved the downsizing of an older and outdated existing facility from 24 inpatient rooms to 3, the consolidation of Operation and Endoscopy Suites, the outsourcing of food services, and other reductions in operations and services; resulting in roughly half of the existing hospital being demolished. What remained was a consolidation of acute care, specialty services that would be supplemented by a regional partnership with a larger healthcare system. The follow-up phase involved the addition of a 2-level medical office building totaling 20,000 square feet of non-acute care services; these included physical and respiratory therapy, as well as general practice physicians in a modern, cooperative floor plan. The design of this additional also drastically enhanced wayfinding throughout the campus and dramatically improved access to the helipad.
