This proposed Academic Medical Center in Abu Dhabi was programmed and designed to serve as the Tertiary Medical Center for the UAE Military and the Royal Family of the UAE. In addition to advanced medical care, its mission includes recruiting, educating, and training medical students (physicians, nurses, medical technicians), faculty and visiting medical consultants throughout the Arab Gulf Region. In this capacity, the program for designing this facility includes use of advanced Information Technology systems to promote an atmosphere of interactive instructional methods. This system of integrated technologies will allow students to become active participants in their own learning. These will include (as a minimum):
– live lectures (from any worldwide location) utilizing broadcast, telemedicine and telecommunications audio-video links;
– interactive two-way communications between lecturer and students via laptop computers connected via real-time systems (power & network connections at each seat);
– projector screen technologies for simultaneous enlarged view capabilities on multiple screens, both fixed and moveable (located on potentially all walls of lecture halls & classrooms);
– multi-media stream-video for after-lecture viewing of sample materials or products on the same screen (instructor notes and displays available for follow-up assignments);
– interactive "white board" to electronically record, store & re-broadcast notes or graphics developed during instructional sessions;
– interactive touch-screen controls built into the podium for instructor control capabilities (lighting systems-dimming, on-off, accent lights, window shades, projection screens, equipment on-off controls, audio volume controls, etc.);
– real-time foreign language translation capabilities during lectures or broadcasts via headsets at each seat
