The University of North Carolina at Charlotte's Student Activity Center will be the new focus of campus life for the entire University. The mission of the facility is threefold: (1) to provide space for student interaction, recreation and intramural play, (2) to provide for major campus events such as commencement, varsity sports, and concerts, and (3) to provide additional space for campus food service.
Odell met the mission of the facility by designing a multi-purpose building. Major spaces within the design include an arena with fixed and retractable telescopic seating for 9,500 spectators that converts to a series of intramural practice courts for recreational use, a food court convertible to a concourse for major events, and a hospitality room subdividable to a series of classrooms for seminars, etc. The building includes a game room for student relaxation. These spaces are complemented by lockers, administrative offices for athletics, and exercise and weight areas. Through its variety of uses, the Student Activity Center will bring together the University and the extended community in one building.
