This combined facility consists of 80 inpatient beds, 40 of which are devoted to orthopedic care and 40 to burns. The operating philosophy is to respond to shorter lengths of stay, major emphasis on outpatient care and family focused care. The site includes a nine level, 300,000 square foot hospital with an attached 700 car parking structure with the top level serving as the outdoor play area for the children. In addition, the facility has a large central activity space that is located at the base of an atrium. This activity space serves as the main therapeutic and activity space for the entire hospital. An eight story cylindrical atrium serves as an interior organizing element providing natural light to flood the interior of the building. This has created a pleasing atmosphere and has contributed to the children's rehabilitation.
