Faced with an immediate need for additional pediatric inpatient beds, the Hospital elected to expand into 14,000 SF occupied by a psychiatric unit. A $2.8M renovation was needed to accommodate all functional program requirements. The following eight key project goals were established during the schematic design phase:
• Decompress the existing Children's Center to relieve crowded conditions
• Explore and test new ideas in patient room layout and Nursing Care Delivery
• Increase patient and family privacy by providing all single patient rooms with full bathrooms
• Reduce risk of infection by allowing physical separation of patients
• Provide parent sleep-in capability
• Add two isolation rooms to enable control of airborne infection
• Increase the total number of monitored beds
• Incorporate art and music as integral design themes
The design team created a lively, yet functional 16-bed unit with gently curving corridors, colorful and playful floor patterns, and private rooms with patient and family amenities. Additionally, the central nurse station is supplemented by staff work stations between every two patient rooms for direct patient observation.
