This program provided a replacement hospital for an existing facility constructed in the early 1950's. Due to changes in patient care needs, healthcare design standards and codes, outpatient care and other support functions were cramped within the existing building. The new facility expands outpatient care and provides the area needed for state-of-the-art orthopedic care for children.
The interior finishes, with intense colors, convey a playful atmosphere. Bold yellow suns, bright blue waves, large green mountains and swirling red spirals are woven into the face of the carpet and fabrics. These symbols appear as sidewalk chalk drawings and assist in wayfinding. Alternating symbols at the entrance to patient rooms identify the central color scheme for that room. The carpet, fabric, and wallcovering then repeat the symbol and color in each room and thus produce an individual identity for each patient to associate with "their room". This association creates a sense of belonging and a point of geographical reference for the patient.
