This office facility for the Health Services Foundation was the first building constructed on the Fontaine Research Park site on the outskirts of Charlottesville, Virginia. Planned for a total of nine buildings, the Fontaine Master Plan recalls Jefferson's original plan for the Mall at the University of Virginia. All buildings are positioned around a central green space with tree-lined pedestrian promenades, benches, planters and fountains accentuating the pastoral setting of the site.
The internal configuration of varying departmental sizes required an off-centered main circulation core. This shifting of the core to the west brings the main entry closer to the pre-dictated parking field. This assymetry is further enhanced by the hillside location. Benefiting from the site's natural slope, the lunch room area is placed on a level below Lobby Level, allowing for a two story space open to the Main Lobby and to an outdoor eating area.
