The Roger & Debbie Clemens Pediatric Wing of the Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital (CMHH) in Houston, Texas, is part of an upfit for the entire 8th floor of an existing 11-story building. Roger Clemens, the great Major League baseball pitcher and future hall-of-famer, donated additional money and memorabilia to augment the Pediatrics portion of the upfit (about 20,000 GSF) with a sports-oriented design.
Roger and Debbie Clemens directed the architect to create a tactile experience for patients and family and to share the Clemens' realization that a strong family life is the foundation for personal achievement. The architect supplemented these goals with others: empower the patient to get healthy; support CMHH's family-care concept; mask the image of "hospital"; and, create a fun working environment for staff. All of these goals evolved to be coalescent and served to greatly activate the space.
The design solution was conceived as a stage set to simulate the experience of going to a ballgame with family. The design was structured around multiple strategies for achieving effects of spatial depth and supported by stadium-related props and memorabilia, stadium-like material finishes, and wall murals. The main corridor though the Pediatrics Department simulates a sidewalk that brings out the emotion of arrival at the stadium itself, which is located at each pod.
